Compatibility Contrast Of Old Games Between Linux And Vista
Although Linux could run software games basing on Windows through Wine simulator, it is no doubt that compatibility is probably not very good. Some games based on Windows XP platform could not run in Vista, but they could create miracles in Linux system. We can do some tests on the latest Vista system and Linux system.
Test 1: "Soldat": this is a free game. Although this game is free, it is very wonderful and exciting, and could be running in XP system. Under Vista: When the game begins, there displays the pattern of gray background and red pane, and then the whole screen is black. After that, the computer crashes. Open the computer again and repeat the above approaches, but the computer crashes again. Under Wine+Linux: In the default configuration, the game could not work; but after changing the configuration, the game could run but the speed is a little slow.
Test 2: "Darinia", this game issued in 2005 is a simple small game. Under Vista: It is similar to "soldat", the computer crashes with black screen. If the problem could not resolved, the user could seek for the patch of Vista operating system but the game speed is only 10 frames. Under Wine+Linux: the game could ideally run with the appalling speed; It needn't any modification program and it runs faultlessly; moreover, its speed could be compared with the speed of Windows XP.
Test 3: "Blackthorne", it is the first game of Blizzard Company. The
aim of testing this game is not for entertainment but reminiscence. The issue date of this game is very so long, so it could be running only with DOS. Under Dosbox+Vista: the reason, why Blackthorne could not work, is not difficult to be guessed. Dosbox could not work, there is nothing on screen and the background music is loud, the tester could try to close the music. Then the Dosbox window stops the response, and the tester could use "Ctrl + Alt + Del" to solve the problem. Under Dosbox+Linux: the computer outputs the error information of sound blaster, while the tester reinstalls the compatibility pattern of sound blaster to solve all the problems. After that, the game could smoothly run.
Test 4: "Civilization 4", many players like the series games of "Civilization"; naturally, there are a few people testing this game. Under Vista: when the player puts game CD into CD-ROM and installs the game, he gets the depressing information: "this program encounters error, please seek for the solution online." Thus, after upgrading it to 1.61 patches, the "civilization 4" could be running after that. Under Wine+Linux: if the DirectX could not be found, the game will not run. After adding Cedega, the problem could be resolved.
Conclusion: Win platform game compatibility of advanced Vista operating system is not a patch on that of the Linux, isn't it? Although this test is a little biased, the result is still appalling. The problems of old application under Vista operating system abandoned by Microsoft will hand to Linux, won't they?
